The Dwarves on Korimina

'The trip was long. It was rare for their kind to even see the ocean let alone set foot on a boat that purposed to cross it. Many knew the exact reason for the crossing, but most did not. They knew only that the Grunder Clan, their strongest ally, had decided to leave the ancestral home of the dwarves . . .' Record of the Crossing by Starn Rictschrov
150 years ago nearly 200 dwarves from 6 Clans left the traditional homes of the dwarves to travel to Korimina to make a new start. The true reason of the move was know only to their leader Threndalson Grunder and a small number of his closest lieutenants. The exact reason is a guarded secret to the Grunder Clan to this day, but there is much conjecture and speculation among historians and scholars.

Most theories fall along similar lines. Threndalson was of the Warrior Cast, but he was raised by his largely Religious Cast family. This created a 'Warrior-Thinker'. During his time this was not a well-excepted type of Warrior. Threndalson was never shy to express his opinion, and was often credited with stirring up the younger dwarves against the traditions and rules of the past.

As Threndalson grew he encouraged his children to follow in his stead. They were Warrior Cast, just like their father, but they held to his ideals. They spread his wisdom further and further through the dwarfish people. Threndalson's sons are best know for traveling to all parts of the world to preach their father's word.

It is a documented fact that Threndalson and his Clan mother Threnora were called before the Council of the Twelve a short 3 months before his plans to relocate were announced. It is know that the Council has always been far more conservative they even they are willing to admit. The opinion of most sages is that the Council was unwilling to punish or banish Threndalson; they would have been, with good reason some say, afraid of backlash from the younger generations.

It is believed that the Council and Threndalson came to an agreement. They would do nothing to him and they would allow him to continue to express his opinions. He would, however, have to remove himself from the center of dwarfish population. This theory has never been validated by any dwarfish source, and it most likely never will be.

'My wife is giving birth to our first child. It is also the first child born to any family here on the island. Our people need a point of light. I hope that now that children are being born they will be part of this place more than their parents. Much as my father might wish otherwise many of our people came here out of pride, not out of belief in my father's ideals. Pride at being told they could not do something. Pride at being told they were wrong. I hope children of the island will be at home here not dislocated to here.' From the journals of Rocyr Grunder
The earliest years were not kind to the dwarves. Many of them came with Threndalson out of a desired to thumb their nose at the Council, not necessarily because they wished to be ruled by Threndalson.

The first few years were dominated by efforts to clean out the systems of caverns that had been established as their home. The dwarves could not identify specifics, but the accepted wisdom was that the caves had been inhabited by some kind of goblin or orc city. The inhabitants of the city were gone many years before the first dwarf set foot in the caves, but many of their traps still remained in working order. It was not uncommon for scouting parties to leave and never return.

After much effort the dwarves did retake enough of the caves to live and work. There have been missions to the deeper caves, but they have all ended in failure. 50 years ago the dwarves decided to close all but 6 paths to the lower reaches. These 6 paths have been placed under the care of each of the original 6 clans. It is the duty of those clans to guard and fortify the path. It is considered a honor to serve a post on the Cydtruldruval, or Gate of the Unknown.

The dwarves still venture into the deeper reaches, but they never venture far. They also never go without substantial armed support. The most recent venture occurred 30 years ago. It met with a less than successful fate.

'My people are blind. They do not see the damage they do by allowing these other races to thin our culture. They will need to be taught their error. I pray that the death count will be small, but I know that my goals are just so I do not fear the results.' From the Manifesto of Drylomir
Since the day the dwarves left the boat there have been a faction of dwarves less excepting of the liberal ways of Threndalson. They act much like hard-core members of the Warrior Cast. They push to keep the old ways intact and to limit contact with outside races. In recent years the faction has begun to be more vocal. They have not as of yet resorted to any form of violence.
